Ask your company's rideshare or human
resources department about your eligibility for
these commute benefits.
Transit/Vanpool Allowance
Employees can receive up to $65 a month, or
$780 a year, tax-free, to purchase transit
passes or pay for fares on registered vanpools
or company buses.
Qualified Parking
Employees can receive up to $175 a month, or $2,100 a year, tax-free,
for paid parking expenses. This benefit may be offered in addition to
the Transit/Vanpool subsidy: for example, an employer could opt to help
cover parking expenses incurred by an employee who drives to a paid parking
lot to take transit.
Parking Cash-Out
Employer-provided parking can be "cashed out". This pays employees
to permanently give up their parking, based on a fair market value of
the parking space. Employees can receive up to $175 a month, or $2,100
a year. Employees may receive the value as taxable cash, a tax-free fringe
benefit for transit/vanpool fares(up to $65/month), or a combination of
cash and fringe.
Regional Incentive Programs
Many local transportation agencies offer carpoolers $2/day and discount
cards for goods and services.
Guaranteed Ride Home
Some employers offer carpoolers a guaranteed ride home for added flexibility
in the case of emergency or no-show commute partners.
